A tyre that wears evenly is being loaded correctly; a tyre that wears in an irregular pattern is revealing a fault somewhere in the suspension, steering, or alignment. The pattern — where on the tyre the wear appears, and whether it is smooth or scalloped — points directly at the cause. This guide maps each wear pattern to its most likely suspension fault, explains what to inspect, and tells you what happens if you replace the tyres without fixing the cause first (the same pattern returns on the new set). A worn damper cannot control the spring's rebound energy — instead of returning the wheel to the road surface after a bump in a single controlled motion, it allows the wheel to bounce. Each bounce lifts the tyre off the surface for a fraction of a second, then stamps it back down. The point of impact wears faster than the contact patch that follows, creating a repeating pattern of high and low spots around the tyre circumference. To feel cupping: press your hand firmly against the tyre tread and drag it in the direction of travel. A smooth tyre feels uniform. A cupped tyre has a clear wave pattern — alternating high ridges and worn valleys. The spacing between the ridges corresponds to the tyre's bounce frequency at the speed where it typically occurs. Key fact: replacing the tyres without replacing the dampers will reproduce the cupping pattern on the new set within 10,000–20,000 km. The money saved on dampers is spent twice on tyres. Inner edge wear and camber Inner edge wear is the most common alignment-related pattern on European roads. Excessive negative camber (the top of the wheel leaning inward more than designed) concentrates tyre load on the inner shoulder. The causes on a car that has not been deliberately lowered are mechanical: worn ball joints, collapsed or cracked wishbone bushes, or worn subframe mountings that allow the whole front suspension to shift inward under load. Replacing the tyres and adjusting camber cures the symptom. Replacing only the tyres without finding the worn component means the camber will drift back to the fault position and the wear pattern returns. Inspect the ball joints for play and the rubber bushes for cracking or compression set before deciding the cure is an alignment adjustment alone. Feathering and toe Feathering — the sawtooth pattern felt by running a hand across the tread blocks rather than along the tyre — indicates toe misalignment. If the front wheels point inward (toe-in), the outer edge of each tread block is worn faster; if outward (toe-out), the inner edge. Track rod ends are the most common cause of toe drift on higher-mileage cars: they carry the lateral loads that set toe angle, and their ball-and-socket joints wear gradually. An alignment check will confirm the toe figure; if it is outside specification on a car that has been recently aligned, the track rod ends are the place to look. What to do: the correct repair sequence Diagnose the wear pattern using the table above. Inspect and replace the faulty component — damper, ball joint, bush, track rod end, as indicated. Check wheel alignment after any suspension component replacement. Replace the tyres once the cause is fixed. Do not invert steps 2 and 4. New tyres fitted before the cause is fixed will reproduce the pattern. The fault generates the wear; the wear is a symptom, not the problem itself. Perform the bounce test at the corner with the cupped tyre: press the bodywork down firmly at that corner and release. If it bounces more than once before settling, the damper is worn and is the likely cause. A visual check for oil on the damper body confirms failure. If the damper passes the bounce test and shows no leaks, check wheel balance and the condition of the hub bearing — both can contribute to cupping in some cases. Can alignment alone cause cupping, without a damper problem? Rarely. Cupping — the wavy, full-width scalloped pattern — is almost always a damper problem. Alignment faults produce edge wear or feathering, not cupping. If you see what you think is cupping and the dampers are new, check wheel balance first — an imbalanced wheel creates a similar bouncing effect at certain speeds. My car has inner edge wear. Will alignment fix it permanently? Only if the alignment is out due to adjustment drift (minor wear-in), not due to a worn mechanical component. If there is play in the ball joint or the wishbone bushing has collapsed, the camber will drift back to the fault position after alignment. Inspect the joints and bushes before and after alignment — if the camber cannot hold the correct angle under load, the mechanical cause has not been addressed. How often should I rotate my tyres to avoid uneven wear? Every 10,000–15,000 km on a car with all identical tyres and no significant handling imbalance. However, tyre rotation does not cure a suspension fault — it only spreads the wear more evenly across all four tyres, extending the time before replacement while the underlying cause continues. If one corner consistently wears faster than the others, find and fix the cause rather than rotating it away. Is uneven tyre wear an MOT or roadworthiness test failure? It depends on severity. A tyre worn below the legal minimum tread depth (1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread in most EU countries) will fail. Visible structural damage from cupping or camber wear that has cut into the tyre structure is also grounds for failure. Moderate uneven wear may be noted as an advisory but not a failure — check your specific country's regulations.
